Calgary trade credentials explained
Plain-English definitions for every credential on a Calgary Trade HQ listing — what it means, who has it, why it matters, and where you can verify it.
Red Seal certificate
A Red Seal certificate is a federal Canadian trade certification confirming a tradesperson has passed the inter-provincial standards exam in their trade. It is administered in Alberta by Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) and recognised across all provinces and territories.
The Red Seal endorsement appears on a Journeyperson certificate and lets the tradesperson work in any participating province without re-certifying. Red Seal trades include electrician, plumber, gasfitter, HVAC technician, carpenter, automotive service technician, and around 50 others on the federal list.
On a Calgary Trade HQ listing, a verified Red Seal credential includes the tradesperson's certificate number. You can confirm any Red Seal holder against the Tradesecrets Alberta credential check.

A Journeyperson is a tradesperson who has completed an apprenticeship and passed the trade certification exam. In Alberta, Journeyperson status is awarded by Apprenticeship and Industry Training and is required to legally work as the lead tradesperson on most regulated trade work.
Journeyperson is the credential that matters most for whether someone can legally do work that needs to be inspected and signed off. An apprentice can do the work, but a Journeyperson must supervise and is on the hook for code compliance.
A Red Seal endorsement is added on top of Journeyperson status. A Journeyperson Electrician without a Red Seal endorsement can work in Alberta but may need re-certification to work in other provinces.

A City of Calgary business licence is the municipal licence required for any business operating in Calgary. The licence number confirms the business is registered with The City, has paid the licensing fee, and meets municipal zoning and operating requirements.
Licence categories vary — contractor, retail, food service, trades, professional. A trades-related business will hold a licence in the relevant trade category. The licence is annual and must be renewed.
On Calgary Trade HQ, a verified City of Calgary licence includes the business licence number. You can confirm any business by searching the City of Calgary licence search.

WCB (Workers' Compensation Board) Alberta active coverage means the business pays into Alberta's workplace injury insurance program for its workers. It is required for most Alberta employers and protects you, the homeowner, from liability if a worker is injured on your property.
If a worker is injured on your property and the business does not have WCB coverage, you can be held liable for medical costs, lost wages, and rehabilitation. Hiring a business with active WCB coverage transfers that risk to the WCB system.
WCB coverage is verified by a Clearance Letter — a document confirming the business is in good standing with WCB as of a specific date. Premium Calgary Trade HQ listings link directly to the WCB clearance lookup.

GST/HST registration confirms the business is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency to collect and remit Goods and Services Tax. In Canada, businesses with over $30,000 in taxable revenue per year are required to register and charge GST.
A GST-registered business on a quote is one that legally invoices for taxable services. Cash-only deals at suspiciously low prices that skip GST are often signs of an unregistered or under-the-table operation — risky to engage with for warranty, insurance, and consumer protection reasons.
You can confirm any business's GST status by their Business Number (BN) at the CRA registry. Calgary Trade HQ premium listings include the BN where verified.

A Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating is an independent letter grade (A+ to F) reflecting a business's complaint history, transparency, and BBB-monitored behaviour. BBB Accreditation is a separate paid programme businesses can join — accreditation does not by itself guarantee a higher rating.
BBB ratings draw on customer complaints filed with the BBB, the business's response to those complaints, and BBB's assessment of advertising and operating practices. A high BBB rating without significant complaint history is a meaningful signal of a reputable operator.
On Calgary Trade HQ, verified premium listings show the BBB letter grade and link directly to the BBB profile, where you can read individual complaint records and the business's replies.

Commercial general liability insurance covers a contractor's legal liability for property damage or bodily injury caused by their work. For Calgary trades, $2 million in coverage is the typical minimum; $5 million is standard for larger contractors.
If a plumber's soldering joint fails six months after the install and floods your basement, the plumber's liability insurance is what pays for the damage. No insurance — or insufficient coverage — and you are chasing the contractor personally for compensation, often through small claims court.
On Calgary Trade HQ, verified liability insurance shows the coverage amount and policy expiry date. The certificate of insurance is held privately on file — not displayed publicly, but confirmed at verification.
Service Alberta Prepaid Contractor Licence
A Service Alberta Prepaid Contractor Licence is required for any Alberta business that takes deposits or prepayments for residential construction, renovation, or installation work. It exists to protect homeowners from contractors taking deposits and walking away.
Prepaid contractor licensing requires a security deposit lodged with Service Alberta — money that homeowners can claim against if the contractor fails to deliver. Contractors operating residential work without this licence cannot legally take deposits.
For Calgary renovation, building, and general contracting work, the Service Alberta Prepaid Contractor Licence is the most important consumer-protection credential. Calgary Trade HQ verifies and links to the licence number where applicable.

Alberta industry associations are voluntary professional bodies for specific trades. Membership signals continuing education, peer accountability, and (for some associations) access to dispute-resolution programmes and ongoing technical training.
Common Alberta associations on Calgary Trade HQ listings include ECAA (Electrical Contractors Association of Alberta), MPABC-equivalent provincial plumbing associations, ARCA (Alberta Roofing Contractors Association), Landscape Alberta, and the Canadian Home Builders' Association — Calgary Region (CHBA Calgary).
Association membership is voluntary — non-membership does not mean a business is unqualified. But for high-stakes work like a roof replacement or a basement renovation, association membership signals a contractor invested in industry standards beyond the legal minimum.
