About this directory
Calgary Trade HQ is one operator, not a marketing department
Built and run by Jason Townsend, founder of High Country Digital. Calgary Trade HQ verifies every premium credential at the public register that issued it — and links you to that register so you can confirm it yourself.
Why this directory exists
Most contractor directories make money the same way: charge contractors a per-lead fee, charge them again for “Verified Pro” status, and rank paying contractors above non-paying ones in search results. The homeowner sees a “verified” badge and assumes someone checked the licence. Usually nobody did.
When I started looking at the Calgary market, the pattern was the same. HomeStars charges contractors monthly subscriptions plus per-lead fees. The BBB grades businesses but does not verify their trade tickets. Yelp ranks by ad spend. Google Maps shows you a business but says nothing about whether their City of Calgary licence is current. None of them link out to Tradesecrets Alberta to confirm a Red Seal cert. None of them link out to WCB Alberta to confirm clearance.
Calgary Trade HQ does. Every premium credential — Red Seal ticket, City of Calgary licence, WCB clearance, GST registration, BBB rating — links to the public register that issued it. You click Verify ↗. You see the truth at the source. We are not the source of truth. The register is.
What runs differently here
- Flat $99 CAD/year for premium listings. No per-lead charges. No commission on hired work. No tiered “visibility boost” upsell. The flat-fee model means a Calgary contractor on this directory is not paying us a slice of every job they win — which keeps our incentive aligned with showing the most relevant result, not the highest-paying one.
- Free standard listings, forever. Most Calgary trades on the directory pay nothing. Free listings show contact details and category; premium adds verified credentials, photos, hours, and the multi-platform review block. See what each tier includes.
- Three review platforms in one place. Premium profiles show Google, HomeStars, and BBB ratings side-by-side, pulled from each platform with a link back to the source. No selective screenshots. No platform bias. The numbers match what each register publishes today.
- Calgary-only. No Toronto plumbers. No Vancouver electricians. Every business listed is verified Calgary-based, with neighbourhood-level coverage across Inglewood, Kensington, Beltline, the SE quadrant, and the rest of the city.
Who I am
I'm Jason Townsend. I run High Country Digital — a small digital agency that builds websites, search-visibility programmes, and custom software for trade and service businesses. Calgary Trade HQ is something I built because I needed it to exist for my own work and could not find an honest version of it.
The verification system you see here — Tradesecrets Alberta lookups, City of Calgary licence checks, WCB clearance links, BBB profile pulls, ABN/GST checks for the Australian sister site we're building next — is the same system I use when I'm vetting trades for HCD clients. Linking to the source instead of saying “trust me” is the only verification model that holds up over time. The register can't lie because it's the register.
If you want to know who's behind a listing or a recommendation: it's me. Not a content team, not an algorithm, not an “our editors” placeholder. High Country Digital on LinkedIn.
What Calgary Trade HQ is not
I'm honest about what this directory does and does not do. It is not a job-matching platform — we don't take your enquiry, route it to three contractors, and skim a finder's fee. You contact the contractor directly using the phone number or website on their listing.
It is not a national platform. We don't cover Edmonton (yet — that's next), Vancouver, Toronto, or anywhere else. If you're looking for trades outside Calgary, HomeStars and Yelp cover more ground.
It is not a guarantee. We verify credentials at the source — we cannot guarantee a contractor's work quality, schedule reliability, or how a specific job goes. The verification gives you the legitimacy floor. The hiring conversation, references, and written contract still matter.
How to evaluate this directory yourself
Don't take any directory's word for it — including ours. Here's how the system actually works, in our own words:
- → How we verify Calgary trades — the five-step credential check process
- → Calgary Trade HQ vs HomeStars, Yelp, BBB — honest comparison of what each platform does well
- → Credentials explained — plain-English glossary of every credential we display
- → Calgary permits guide — when you need a permit and who's responsible
For Calgary trade businesses
If you run a Calgary trade and want to be listed: submit your business. Free standard listings publish within 48 hours. Calgary Highlight upgrades are $99 CAD/year flat — full profile, verified credentials, multi-platform reviews, and a free digital audit of your online presence included.
If you have a complaint about another listing, an inaccuracy to correct, or a partnership enquiry: support@calgarytradehq.ca. I read every email myself. Two business days for a reply.
Built by High Country Digital
Calgary Trade HQ is itself an example of the work HCD does — lead-generation directories, search-visibility programmes, custom software, and websites for trade and service businesses. If you have outgrown your current website or need a custom tool that off-the-shelf software won't cover, HCD can probably help.
